1. When will the game release, and on what platforms?

Killers and Thieves will ship on Steam, for PC. Any future ports will be based on demand. It will almost definitely be out by 2016. Probably.

2. Is this going to end up a F2P multiplayer iOS game with energy systems and microtransactions and DLC and locked content?

No. Single player only, one-time purchase. I might give early access a try, but that's completely optional.

3. But you'll probably beg me for cash on Kickstarter any day now, right?

4. How does the management gameplay work?

From the map view of the city, the player manages the growth of their guild. They'll recruit new, inexperienced thieves and send them on missions. As they earn gold, they'll be able to spend it on upgrading their headquarters, improve their thieves and expand their holdings. Everything has an upkeep; failing to pay the weekly expenses will result in lost property and personnel. Become too weak and you'll be found out and taken down by your enemies.

5. How does the mission gameplay work?

Missions are where you acquire stolen goods. Choose multiple thieves and head to a procedurally generated city block. Direct them in real-time through locked and guarded rooms using the skills at your disposal, and loot as much as you can without getting caught. Raising an alarm will have the guards hunting you down, and your thieves aren't super-human: they will get caught and can permanently die.

Balance the risk vs reward of how much you try to get away with on each mission- play it too safe and you might not be able to pay your upkeep. When you get back, inspect your ill-gotten gains and fence the goods for gold. Each mission will cost you a day, so don't waste it.

6. But I can kill guards, right? What's to stop me from murdering everyone in sight?

An all-stealth approach will be riskier and harder, but bloody massacres every mission will kill off your men faster than you can recruit new ones. Remember, you've got Killers and Thieves, but you can play it however you like.

7. What makes my thieves unique?

Your thieves will be good at some things, and bad at others. Nobody can do it all. Each starts with an ability (such as wall climbing), and can learn another ability as they advance. They each have a randomly selected trait and flaw which affect how they perform. Lastly, their appearance is randomly generated from hundreds of different combinations.

8. How do I win?

Killers and Thieves has a lot in common with rogue-likes: permanent death, modular gameplay and lose conditions. The final game will include a story campaign with an ending. Beating the campaign is not a given- it will be challenging.

9. Who is this, anyway? Aren't you supposed to be working on The Banner Saga 2?

I'm Alex Thomas, I was the creative director on The Banner Saga, released in early 2014. I'm now heading up Killers and Thieves, while the Stoic team continue working on The Banner Saga sequels. Don't worry, they've got it well in hand! Both games will be published under Stoic. Pretty standard game dev stuff.
